Want my Openspace NOW, Mommy!
November 14, 2008EDIT:
Ok, I apologize for picking on Dusan, who pointed out the low openspace article ratio contained in Dusan Writer’s Metaverse. And waste of time was a little overstated (ok, I didn’t mean it). You like that? Does anyone believe anything I blog anyway? I sure don’t. But I’m still tired of anyone who IS whining. That part’s true. Ok.. back to the blog..
Ever since the openspace debacle and semi (but not really) reversal by LL, some of the best blogs have turned into a waste of time. Dusan Writer’s is no exception, today’s hilarious post being a bait and switch post with the remark “This post has been a bait & switch post and has nothing to do with SL. What, you think I can’t do that too?”
I’ll stress again, not real impressed with the drunk sailor style of policy making LL are employing these days, but when everyone cried, shouted, and whined that LL misled people into thinking that openspaces were not only for light use by upping the prim count, essentially LL gave everyone what they asked for by lowering the price AND the prim allowance of the openspace back to the original price, and then created the Homestead, the Little Sim on the Prairie, and the “Remember the Alamo!” sim offerings for those who wanted more. With increased price of course. The Homestead essentially equals the Openspace with the increased prim use, but with new limits imposed to ensure adequate performance.
I find it ironic that NONE OF THE WHINERS sees what they did here - first they all purposely ignored the “for light use” instruction for the openspaces, and then they berated LL for tricking them by giving them more. So LL said, “Ok, we’ll make it clear, punks,” and did what they did. Granted, LL has no excuse for not realizing sooner how many people were abusing openspaces and for what purposes, but again, sometimes they forget the people that inhabit SL.
You know what I wonder? I wonder how many crowded venues I went to in the past that were lagged out like a mofo and it was less about LL’s grid performance and more about the fact it was an openspace packed to the gills with bling and scripts and 1000 avatars all stuck in molasses along with me. I’ll never know. But for all those times that was the case, thanks, jerks. I blamed LL when instead I should have been helping you learn how to read.
Still waiting for you people to all leave for OpenLife.
Oh, in answer to Yxes comment in the last Podmafia that if it had really been about performance, LL would have just returned the openspace to the original specs and price, that’s exactly what they did, plus they added some performance limits/checks they were criticized for not having.
In case anyone wonders why I seem to not be as upset with LL over this as much as they, the wonderer, are… well, frankly, LL whine a lot less than you do. I do want to add, though, that apparently LL need some reading glasses as well, because they’re declaring healthy healthy when island additions are in reverse. They’re probably lucky OpenLife isn’t actually up to par as SL competition, if that metric means anything by itself.

I'm tired of the whining...I know how much I paid
Jane2 | November 14, 2008I’m tired of the whining…I know how much I paid for 1/9 of a sim and paid it…if I couldn’t have afforded it, I would have continued to rent. And if LL raises the tier, well I’ll just have to pay it or sell it or something…but I’d still have my RL house and my RL high speed, and my RL super duper graphics card, and all the rest.
Like you, I had no idea what was OS and what was not…but if I visited a freaking MALL OF STORES, I assumed it was a full Sim, not someone’s cheap dream come true.
And as for leaving for OS and LS and the rest…I’ve checked them out and they are more unstable than SL and their owners do the same “we’re in beta” excuse-making. I’m sticking with SL where at least I’m not stuck with an unmodifiable avatar that looks like a guy playing a girl, 42HHHH chest and all….or a wisp….or stuck in the ground.
Hahahaha. Hmmm. And I really, really thought I wasn't whining.
Dusan Writer | November 14, 2008Hahahaha. Hmmm. And I really, really thought I wasn’t whining.
Just to set the record straight, I’ve barely posted on the open space issue. Admiring, however, the concept of bait and switch, I was hoping that people would spend more time questioning why Eve Online can reduce lag to almost zero, but whatever, it can feel a little insular at times I suppose - there ARE other worlds out there, other lessons.
So again, to correct the record. I didn’t whine. I called their policy change a disaster on Metanomics, but I attribute that to their communication skills. They really need to get their act together and come up with more provocative titles for their blog posts IMHO.
Ok, fair enough. It was probably not the fairest choice
Radar | November 14, 2008Ok, fair enough. It was probably not the fairest choice to pick on you. I guess I found your post at the wrong time in my blog scanning. I’ll edit my post and note that it wasn’t the right example to pick.
As for other worlds, absolutely, and SL’ers do indeed get a little insular at times, and LL definitely do have a rather questionable policy and communication record. No arguments there. My issue with the protestors had less to do with whether or not they had the right to question LL’s communications (although I still say the policy stated what Openspaces were for), but in how people proceeded to get seriously lateral in the process of letting their feelings be known.
Anyway. Carry on.
Thanks. Wonderful little recursive thing we had here: me whining
Dusan Writer | November 15, 2008Thanks. Wonderful little recursive thing we had here: me whining about not actually whining, you spending time whining about how people whine too much, and then a few loops back to paper over the whole thing. Puts me in mind of Tom Boellstorff’s theory of SL being ‘techne within techne’, however I note that even Tom pointedly avoided covering blogs and ‘external media’ in his book, although he was too polite to say that the real reason was that maybe it’s even more of an echo chamber than whatever sim we live on? Your blog excepted of course.
I’m pleased Radar that you’ve uncovered such profound truths and will now wander back to my corner and think about Philip’s hair.
hehe, this was fun.
*carries on*
Profound truths? About SL? The most profound truth I've noticed so
Radar | November 15, 2008Profound truths? About SL?
The most profound truth I’ve noticed so far is that there’s always a crisis, and then people always forget about it and move on. This one’s a little more painful, because it hits people in the pocketbook when they realize they can’t sort of play the system a little and get sims for “normal” use on the cheap, but in time it’ll pass. It would be nice if islands were cheaper, etc, but I really doubt the theories that LL is making bucket loads of cash on sims. I’m sure they make some, but probably not loads of it.
As for excepting my blog from whatever echo chamber fallacies befall anyone else’s, I myself wouldn’t do that. A lot of times I post stuff that has nothing to do with what anyone else is writing, and a lot of times I write about stuff that does. But that’s fine. The whole world’s an echo chamber, with small sub chambers for various particular interests anyway. The human race tells itself back and forth how great they’re doing, and next thing you know, the whole financial sector’s bankrupt. It’s definitely not something SL bloggers can lay claim to.
Psst. Please add the word "inventing" to the above.

I agree re LL's communication skills...they need to hire someone
Jane2 | November 15, 2008I agree re LL’s communication skills…they need to hire someone who’s had some experience dealing with a large, diverse, and engaged stakeholder group. IMO they need a combination of private and public sector communications because while LL is a private company, its users treat the product with much more engagement, like those of people with their government. At present, LL sucks in this department.
But that doesn’t change the fact that my jaw drops every time I read something posted without any self-awareness, “now I can’t have my dream mall/club/highly scripted airport”.
Yup!
Radar | November 15, 2008Yup!
Finally someone saying something sensible about this entire issue.
Charlton | November 19, 2008Finally someone saying something sensible about this entire issue. As an extensive sim owner in SL I have the same view: The open space sims were intended to allow for open space usage - like vehicles, parks, boating, etc. Never were they meant for city construction or clubs. As someone who purchased many sims so that miy development teams would have the places server power to build and host large groups, it irritates me to hear people who have attempted to defraud the system on which we all depend, bleat when they are caught and the system is corrected. The tragedy in all this is that the more useful open space sim prim limits are now denied to everyone, even those that used them properly, because too many tried to raught the system.
Since 2006 we have experienced lag problems on our sims, maybe 2 or 3 months in total, and because we do large builds and heavy scripting our sims are usually script and super-prim heavy, we rarely have more than 15% spare prim count, yet I can only say that my experience is almost always high speed, and over the last 12 months highly stable (at least with respect to the sims). (Mind you, the latest release seems to be a little less stable, but that might just be our crap new high speed WAN connection which seems to take timeout for smokos every hour). Our computers have always been latest model machines, and in my experience a lot of people experience problems because their machines are just not up to par. But now I also wonder how many of the locations I have visited where performance sucked were due to misuse of the open-space sims rather than any fault of the SL grid. Good-on LL I say, way past time due.
I got caught twice. Paid $L1695 for my sim and
Tira Greenwood | November 20, 2008I got caught twice. Paid $L1695 for my sim and the price was lowered a week after delivery. Then took the reduced price OS to make up for the knock. I repeatedly phoned the concierge line and asked what I could do with my OS sim. I told them I wanted to build a college on it — and there would be classes in the college. That was okay by them. I told them I wanted to add objects galore and was it okay if I used every one of my prims. That was A-Okay by them. I never made any major addition or held any event without calling the concierge first and asking. It was all okay. Then one day, boom, I am not using the OS in the way it was intended. Pahleese! I have abandoned my OS — no point in trying to sell it now. And will be abandoning my region entirely by Dec. 15. I have lost huge amounts of money on this ‘game’ and really think the Lindens do mislead people. Not whining. Just stating facts here. When the concierge tells you — go ahead build your college in your OS, use up all your prims there, hold all the events you like — and then turns around within a year and complains you have misused the OS — that is not A-Okay.
I don't normally say this to blog readers, Tira, but
Radar | November 20, 2008I don’t normally say this to blog readers, Tira, but I really find this hard to believe. I’ve only ever talked to a couple Lindens who handle concierge but they were pretty clear on the policy to me.
If this really did happen, if I were you, I’d name the names of the concierge staff that told you it was ok to build a college there. At least then everyone would know who to avoid for help.
